Enjoy your UAE vacation

The United Arab Emirates has engineered one of the world's most remarkable transformations — desert trading posts reimagined as global metropolises in less than half a century. Dubai's skyline contains the world's tallest building, the world's largest mall and the world's most ambitious artificial islands; Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is among the most beautiful buildings in the world; and between the two cities, the emirate of Sharjah preserves a more traditional Arabian culture through heritage museums and arts festivals. The UAE also offers world-class desert safaris, luxury beach resorts and year-round sunshine. With a uPhone eSIM you'll connect instantly to Etisalat (e&) or du networks for fast 5G coverage across all seven emirates.

Top attractions in the UAE

From record-breaking architecture to ancient forts and golden desert dunes, the UAE packs a surprising range of experiences into a compact geography.

  • Burj Khalifa & Dubai Fountain, Dubai — The world's tallest building (828m) offers observation decks at levels 124 and 148. Below it, the Dubai Fountain performs nightly shows choreographed to music over the Burj Khalifa Lake.
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi — One of the world's largest and most beautiful mosques: 82 domes, 1,000 columns and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. Free entry; modest dress code strictly enforced.
  • Dubai Creek & Gold/Spice Souks — The traditional heart of Dubai: cross by abra (wooden water taxi) to explore labyrinthine souks selling gold by weight and spices by the bag.
  • Desert Safari, Dubai/Abu Dhabi — Dune bashing in a 4×4, camel riding, sandboarding and a Bedouin camp dinner under the stars. The Liwa oasis dunes near Abu Dhabi are the most spectacular.
  • The Louvre Abu Dhabi — A stunning Jean Nouvel-designed museum beneath a perforated dome that creates a "rain of light" — housing a world-class collection of art spanning civilisations.
  • Palm Jumeirah & Atlantis — The world's largest artificial island, visible from space, hosting luxury hotels, the Aquaventure waterpark and an underwater aquarium.

Popular foods to try in the UAE

The UAE's food scene is one of the world's most international — over 200 nationalities live here, producing a dining landscape that spans Emirati traditional cooking, South Asian curries, Lebanese mezze, and Michelin-starred restaurants from every corner of the globe.

  • Al Harees — Emirati slow-cooked wheat and meat (lamb or chicken), simmered for hours until silky smooth. A traditional celebration dish found at local restaurants during Ramadan and Eid.
  • Shawarma — Spiced meat (chicken or lamb) shaved from a rotating spit, wrapped in warm flatbread with garlic sauce, pickles and tomato. The UAE's definitive late-night street food.
  • Machboos (Kabsa) — Fragrant slow-cooked spiced rice with lamb or chicken, scented with dried lemon, cinnamon and rosewater — the Gulf's answer to biryani.
  • Fresh Dates & Camel Milk — Medjool and Khalas dates are among the world's finest; camel milk chocolate is a uniquely Emirati souvenir and snack. Both are sold at airport duty-free.
  • Kunafa — Shredded pastry layered over melted cheese, soaked in orange blossom syrup and topped with crushed pistachios. The most beloved dessert of the Arab world.
  • Biryani (Pakistani/Indian style) — The UAE's South Asian community has produced some of the world's best biryani. Dubai's Meena Bazaar area and Deira are the places to explore.

Best time to visit the UAE

October to April is the best time to visit the UAE — temperatures are comfortable for outdoor sightseeing (22–30°C), the Dubai Shopping Festival runs November–February, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place in late November. Outdoor activities, desert safaris and beach days are all viable during these months.

Winter (December–February) is peak season and the most popular time for international visitors. Expect the highest hotel prices and busiest attractions. The weather is genuinely lovely — a welcome escape from northern European winters — though evenings can be surprisingly cool (15°C).

Summer (May–September) is extremely hot and humid (40–48°C) and largely the preserve of indoor air-conditioned experiences. Many international visitors avoid this period entirely. If you do visit in summer, prices are dramatically lower and the malls and indoor attractions are uncrowded. Ramadan timing (lunar calendar, varies year to year) brings restrictions on eating in public during daylight hours but also spectacular Iftar feasts after sunset.

What to pack for your visit to the UAE

The UAE's combination of extreme heat, conservative cultural norms and world-class luxury creates a specific packing list — respectful clothing for mosques and traditional areas, light layers for aggressive air conditioning, and sun protection for outdoor activities.

  • Modest clothing for religious sites — Both men and women must cover shoulders and knees at the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. Women must also cover hair. Abayas are provided at the entrance, but a long dress or trousers with a loose top is easier.
  • Lightweight layers — Outdoor temperatures in winter are perfect; indoor air conditioning is set to very cold. A light cardigan or jacket is useful in restaurants and malls.
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ — The desert sun is intense. Apply before any outdoor activity, particularly during the cooler months when the sun's deceptive comfort encourages longer exposure.
  • Swimwear — For hotel pools and beach clubs. Note that beachwear must be covered when leaving beach/pool areas; a sarong or cover-up is essential.
  • Comfortable walking shoes — Most of Dubai is navigated by car or taxi, but exploring old Dubai's souks and the Al Fahidi Heritage District on foot is rewarding.
  • Your uPhone eSIM — Connects on Etisalat (e&) or du for 5G coverage across all seven emirates. Note that VoIP calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime calls) are restricted in the UAE — standard calls work normally.
