Enjoy your Vietnam vacation
Vietnam stretches 1,650 kilometres along the South China Sea — a long, narrow country of extraordinary diversity, from the terraced rice paddies of the north to the Mekong Delta's waterway maze in the south. Hanoi's Old Quarter hums with motorbike traffic and street food vendors; Hoi An's lantern-lit ancient town glows at dusk; Halong Bay's limestone karsts rise from emerald water in one of Asia's most dramatic seascapes. Vietnamese food alone justifies the visit — pho, banh mi, fresh spring rolls and bun bo Hue are among the world's great street foods. Vietnam rewards slow travel and rewards travellers who venture off the tourist trail. With a uPhone eSIM you'll connect to Viettel or Vinaphone for solid 4G coverage in cities and along the main tourist corridor.
Top attractions in Vietnam
Vietnam's geography spans tropical beaches, mountain highlands, ancient capitals and river deltas. These are the experiences that define a visit from north to south.
- Halong Bay, Quang Ninh — Overnight cruises through 1,600 limestone islands and islets rising from emerald water — one of Southeast Asia's most iconic landscapes. Choose a small-group junk boat over the mega-cruiser for a more memorable experience.
- Hoi An Ancient Town — A UNESCO-listed merchant town of yellow-plastered shophouses, Japanese covered bridge and lantern-lit canals. Visit in the evening when paper lanterns reflect in the river Thu Bon. Get a dress or suit tailored in 24 hours.
- Phong Nha-Ke Bang Caves, Quang Binh — The world's largest cave system, including Hang Son Doong (the world's largest cave). Even the accessible Paradise and Phong Nha caves are breathtakingly vast.
- Hoan Kiem Lake & Old Quarter, Hanoi — The turtle tower on Hoan Kiem lake is Hanoi's symbol; around it, the 36-street Old Quarter sells silk, spices and street food from ancient merchant guild houses.
- Sapa Rice Terraces, Lao Cai — The stepped rice terraces of the Muong Hoa valley are among Asia's most beautiful agricultural landscapes — best in September during harvest or May–June when paddies fill with water.
- Mekong Delta, Can Tho — A labyrinth of rivers, canals and floating markets where life is conducted by boat. The Cai Rang floating market at dawn is an extraordinary scene.
Popular foods to try in Vietnam
Vietnamese cuisine is a triumph of freshness, balance and regional variety. Northern food is subtle and herb-forward; central Vietnamese food is the spiciest in the country; southern Vietnamese food is sweeter and coconut-rich. Street food is the soul of Vietnamese eating culture — the best meals cost less than $2 USD at a plastic stool on a footpath.
- Pho — The national dish: a clear beef (or chicken) bone broth with rice noodles, thin-sliced beef, fresh herbs, bean sprouts and lime. Hanoi's version is clean and pure; Saigon's is sweeter and more garnished.
- Banh Mi — The Vietnamese baguette sandwich — a French colonial legacy transformed. Crusty baguette filled with pork, pâté, pickled daikon, cucumber, coriander and chilli. One of the world's great street foods at 20,000–40,000 VND.
- Bun Bo Hue — Hue's spicy lemongrass and shrimp paste beef noodle soup — bolder, spicier and more complex than pho. A worthy rival to Vietnam's national dish.
- Fresh Spring Rolls (Goi Cuon) — Rice paper rolls stuffed with prawns, pork, rice noodles and fresh herbs, served with peanut dipping sauce. Light, fresh and addictive.
- Cao Lau — A Hoi An-specific dish: thick chewy noodles with sliced pork, bean sprouts and herbs, using water from a specific ancient well in the Old Quarter. Untranslatable and irreplaceable — only eat it in Hoi An.
- Egg Coffee (Ca Phe Trung) — Hanoi's invention: egg yolk whipped with condensed milk and sugar into a thick, custard-like foam on top of strong Vietnamese coffee. Sweet, rich and deeply satisfying on a cold Hanoi morning.
Best time to visit Vietnam
Vietnam's climate varies enormously by region, and there's no single "best time" for the whole country. For the north (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa), October–April is ideal — dry and cool, with winter temperatures in Hanoi dropping to 15–17°C. May–September brings humidity and typhoon risk in the north.
For central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue, Danang), February–August is dry and sunny. September–November brings heavy rain and flooding — Hoi An's famous seasonal floods can be dramatic but disruptive. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta) has two distinct seasons: dry (December–April) and wet (May–November). The dry season is far more comfortable for travel.
For a single north-to-south journey through Vietnam, January–March offers the best weather compromise — the north is cold but clear, the centre is dry, and the south is warm and sunny. February sees Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations, spectacular but busy — book accommodation months in advance.
What to pack for your visit to Vietnam
Vietnam's humidity, street food culture and frequent temple visits create a practical packing checklist. Light and quick-drying is the philosophy — don't overpack, as laundry is cheap and fast.
- Lightweight, quick-dry clothing — Humidity is relentless in the south. Bring synthetics or linen that air-dry fast — laundry services cost 30,000–50,000 VND per bag.
- Modest clothing for temples — Shoulders and knees must be covered at all temples and pagodas. A sarong or lightweight trousers serves multiple purposes.
- Insect repellent — Essential in the Mekong Delta, Halong Bay overnight cruises and Sapa hill treks. DEET-based products work best in tropical conditions.
- Cash in Vietnamese Dong (VND) — While ATMs are plentiful in cities, street food vendors, local markets and guesthouses in smaller towns are cash-only. Carry small denominations for street food (10,000–50,000 VND).
- Motorbike helmet — If you plan to rent a scooter (popular in Hoi An and Da Lat), bring your own or inspect the rental helmet carefully. Vietnamese traffic is intense — take a short riding lesson before tackling city streets.
- Your uPhone eSIM — Viettel's 4G network covers all major cities, the tourist trail and most highway routes — essential for Google Maps, translation and Grab taxi.
